Choosing a funeral song11th February 2019
Your choice of music can help to create a unique commemoration
In years gone by it was unusual to play anything other than traditional hymns at a funeral, but these days you’re just as likely to hear modern songs like Robbie Williams’ Angels or Whitney Houston’s I will Always Love You.
This change reflects the way in which more and more people are seeing funerals as a celebration of life, adding personal touches that move away from a traditional service. Music stirs the emotions like nothing else and it can be tricky choosing the right song, whether for your own funeral or on behalf of a loved one.
Some songs, like Wind Beneath My Wings, can be poignant and uplifting, whilst others can help to raise a smile, such as Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust. Other songs can offer comfort and reassurance, like Dame Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again or Westlife’s I’ll See You Again. Ardent TV fans have even opted for theme tunes from popular shows such as Only Fools and Horses and Coronation Street.
A survey by Sun Life revealed the UK’s top ten most popular funeral songs in 2018
- My Way, Frank Sinatra
- Time to Say Goodbye, Andrea Bocelli and Sara Brightman
- You’ll Never Walk Alone, Gerry and the Pacemakers
