Calls for tighter regulation on funeral companies

Recent media reports have exposed companies using high-pressure tactics to sell funeral plans and raised concerns over the professionalism of some funeral directors

The government has announced new plans to target companies using high-pressure or bullying tactics to sell funeral plans as evidence shows some providers used misleading sales tactics to get vulnerable customers to pay more. In a bid to prevent this and offer more protection for customers, the Treasury has issued proposals to regulate the UK funeral plan industry.

Many funeral plan providers already sign up to an industry regulator voluntarily, giving customers confidence in the products they are being offered and peace of mind that their affairs will be handled professionally. But some providers choose not to sign up to the rules, hence the government’s plans for regulation.

At WR Bettelley, we welcome this move. All of our pre-paid funeral plans are offered in association with Golden Charter, one of the country’s leading providers. Golden Charter is Funeral Planning Authority (FPA) registered and is the only funeral plan provider recommended by the Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors. We strive to keep our funerals affordable for everyone and pre-paid plans are just one of a range of flexible options - we will only ever offer the best solution for you and your family.

In an ITV report this week, an independent funeral director called for new regulation in response to a growing number of new companies springing up charging inflated prices but without the experience or expertise needed to provide professional standards of care.

Jon Levett, Chief Executive of the National Association of Funeral Directors, agrees there should be a form of regulation in the quality of care offered to bereaved families: “We do not believe price regulation is the way forward but support the idea that on standards there should be a regulatory framework that gives the public greater choice, ensures best practice, promotes healthy competition and means that when people arrange a funeral they do so confident that they are getting the service they want and are fully aware along every step of the way what it will cost.”

As members of the National Association of Funeral Directors, we echo Jon’s comments. WR Bettelley is a small, independent, family-owned business, proudly serving generations of families across North Staffordshire since 1905. As dedicated professionals, we promise to provide you with an outstanding service, helping you, your family and friends through a painful time with compassion and sensitivity.
